The weekend reset: part ritual, part survival strategy. Between work, home life, kids, errands, and the never-ending cycle of what's for dinner?, it's easy to feel like you're constantly chasing the week. But carving out even a small amount of intentional time on the weekend to reset your space, mind, and schedule can make a big difference.

Here are some helpful tips on how to prep for a calm(er) week ahead — no overwhelm, no perfection, just simple things that help me feel more grounded when Monday rolls around.

🧺 1. Clear the Chaos (Just a Little)

This isn’t about deep cleaning the whole house — it’s about tidying up the visual noise that can mess with your focus. Perhaps try and pick two or three areas to reset:

  • The kitchen counters

  • Your desk or workspace

  • The laundry situation (even if it’s just one load to feel ahead)

It’s genuinely surprising how much of a difference just 20 to 30 minutes of light tidying can make for your mental well-being. When your surroundings are cluttered (dishes piled up, laundry overflowing, random items scattered across counters) it’s easy to feel scattered internally, too. However, taking even a short burst of time to clear off a surface, put things back where they belong, or make one area feel "done" can have an immediate calming effect.

To reiterate, it’s not about perfection; it’s about creating just enough order to make your space feel supportive rather than stressful. That small effort often creates a ripple effect, helping you feel more in control, more focused, and just a little more at peace heading into the week.

📝 2. Look at the Week Ahead

On Sunday evening, try and spend a few quiet minutes looking at your calendar and to-do list. Ask yourself:

  • What appointments or events do I need to plan for?

  • What’s one top priority for work or life?

  • What can I drop or push if the week is feeling heavy?

This will help you to mentally shift from weekend mode to a more intentional mindset, without the Sunday scaries.

🥗 3. Loose Meal Plan (Not a Meal Prep Marathon)

If you have some time, prep a few basics: chopped veg, a batch of pasta, maybe overnight oats. But mostly just plan out 3–4 meals and to make sure you have what you need in terms of the ingredients. It’s not about gourmet cooking. It’s about more intentional grocery shopping and removing the 5 p.m. “what are we eating?” stress spiral.

🧠 4. Digital Clean-Up

Quick wins:

  • Clear your email inbox (or at least the spam and clutter)

  • Review your phone calendar

  • Close tabs you haven’t touched in three days (you’re not going back, let’s be honest)

Just like real life clutter, digital clutter = mental clutter. A few minutes of tidying can feel surprisingly calming and help you feel more organised.

🌿 5. Do One Thing Just for You

Yes, resets are about prepping, but they’re also about restoring. So, you should always try to do one small thing that feels like a treat:

  • A bath after the kids are in bed

  • Reading a book with no purpose

  • A quiet walk, no podcast, just you

No guilt, no multitasking, just a moment that’s entirely yours. In the constant juggle of responsibilities, it’s easy to slip into the role of taskmaster, feeling like every spare minute needs to be productive or accounted for.

However, carving out a bit of time to simply be — whether that’s enjoying a quiet cup of tea, taking a walk without your phone, or reading a few pages of a book you love — is more than a luxury; it’s a necessity. It’s a small but powerful reminder that you’re a whole person, not just the scheduler, cleaner, cook, or caretaker.

Giving yourself permission to pause and breathe, even briefly, helps restore your energy and reconnects you to yourself — something every “project manager of the household” deserves.

☁️ Remember: Done is Better Than Perfect

You don’t need to have a Pinterest-level reset for it to be meaningful. Some weekends you might do all five things. Some weekends it’s just one — and that’s still a win.

The goal isn’t a flawless week. The goal is a calmer mind, a smoother start, and a little bit of breathing room when Monday hits.
